Dear Readers:

As Dumurei celebrates its first year of publication, we look forward to an even greater year ahead.
2011 will be remembered as one of the most difficult year ever for many of us; it will also be recorded
as a year of great triumph for some. At Dumurei we are no longer struggling, neither are we
operating in strife. We held our first board meeting in October, members of the board appeared not
to be preoccupied with the sad state of the world economies, the distances that separate us, nor the
varying languages through which we communicate. Rather, we look forward to setting the agenda
for 2012, setting our standards even higher and celebrating the Garifuna online presence. A few
Members of the Board have donated several hundred dollars to be used to obtain the 501(c)(3)
exemption which will allow us to operate as a non-profit organization. Mr. Wellington Ramos has
pledged to offer his services in filling out the application.

Our writers, photographers, videographers and readers are to be commended as well. Heather
Cunningham, Esq. has written two articles, one of which 'The Business Side of Music...Collective
Management of Copyright in Belize' is this edition's feature article. Ms. Cunningham's other
contribution is a travel piece that focuses on her trip to Denmark to attend (WOMEX), the World
Music Expo. Freda Sideroff wrote a piece on her visit to Buyei Gotay's restaurant in Labuga,
Guatemala. We look forward to receiving more travel stories from our writers and contributors,
especially those who have travelled throughout Garifuna Duwou.

Charles Lino has offered to serve as our online content editor; his quarterly editor's note as well as
his pick for the poem-of-the-week will be published shortly. We heard from Dr. Luther Castillo in
Honduras. Dr. Castillo directed us to Karen Lustgarten's video of volunteering work being carried out
at the hospital in Ciriboya, Honduras. Sometime in 2012, we will hire an intern and an employee or
two to assist us with the growth and monetizing of the magazine.

We have made attempts to reach out to our counterparts and cousins in Dominica, and Trinidad and
Tobago; we will be reaching out to those living in Guyana, Canada and England who are wont to tell
their stories. Introductory articles on the indigenous people of these countries are being published by
Dumurei, but in keeping with our mission and vision, we would prefer to present our readers with
articles written by those who have 'lived experiences.'

Dumurei continues to be a platform for the voiceless, the entrepreneurs among us, the creative and
talented and for those who are doing great work, but would otherwise not be recognized by
mainstream media. Ezra Stanley, Mali Cayetano, Tehuti Imhotep, Rhodel Castillo, Heather
Cunningham, Carlos Domingo 'Mingo' Alvarez, Buyei Gotay, Oscar Ramirez, Freda Sideroff, Miriam
Miranda, Phyllis Cayetano and countless others are among those who have come to recognize that it
is imperative that we continue to invent and implement systems and organizations that serve our
needs. Their stories must be told.

This issue is dedicated to the memory of Board Member Francis Austin "Pappi Pee" Paulino who
passed away in January, 2011.

Itarra la!
